Matt Regalado is a young lawyer who lives on his boat in a San Diego marina. He is the illegitimate son of Dr. Jay Aronsen, who took advantage of Matt’s 16 year old mother when she worked as a babysitter for the Aronsen family. Sitting in court one morning, waiting to file a motion, the judge appoints Matt to represent Yolanda who is charged with possession of cocaine for sale. Matt gets the charge dismissed on an unlawful search motion.
Yolanda’s father, Eduardo Moreno, launders money for the Tijuana drug cartel. When he hears about this quick dismissal he sends Sofia, his older daughter, to pay Matt ten thousand dollars in cash. Matt wonders about a cash payment for a drug charge, but doesn’t hesitate to accept the money.
